In this model, what acts like a cell membrane? __________________________________________________ Which molecules are being used inside the cell? _____________________________________________ Which molecule(s) are in the environment of this cell? ________________________________________ What is diffusion? _______________________________________________________________________ What is osmosis? ________________________________________________________________________ Materials: dialysis tube Benedicts solution 2 test tubes iodine 1 small bottle of hot water Karo syrup test tube holder starch suspension test tube clamp 250 mL graduated cylinder string 10 mL graduated cylinder scissors funnel ring stand Procedure: The dialysis tube has been boiled to make it easier to handle. Open the tube, tie off one end with a knot. Use a funnel to put Karo syrup into half of the dialysis bag, Add starch suspension to the dialysis bag bringing it to 3/4 full. Tie the top of the bag with a double knot of string so that there is as little air as possible above the liquid. Rinse the bag well with warm water. Find the volume of the bag by water displacement. Record the volume under results. Suspend the bag as shown below so that the top string knot hangs just above the water level. Leave the set up for at least 20 minutes. Complete the reasoning part of the experiment; use it to determine what other steps are needed. Karo syrup (sugar & water molecules) Starch suspension (starch & water molecules) Hot tapwater (water molecules only) Reasoning: Where is the greater concentration of water molecules? jar-water outside bag / inside bag Where is the greater concentration of sugar molecules? jar-water outside bag / inside bag Where is the greater concentration of starch molecules? jar-water outside bag / inside bag Describe the results of the Benedicts Test if sugar molecules are present. Describe the results of the Starch Test if starch molecules are present. Results: 6. What happened to the size of the bag? _______________________________________ Measurement at the beginning_______ Measurement at the end________ 7. Was sugar present in the jar water at the end? How do you know? 8. Was starch present in the jar water at the end? How do you know? Conclusions: Did osmosis occur?______If so, which direction? (in or out of the bag?)______The answer to which question(s) above supports your conclusion?______(# 6, 7, and/or 8) Did diffusion of sugar occur?______If so, which way?______ Supportive evidence?______ (# 6, 7, and/or 8) Did diffusion of starch occur?______If so, which way?______ Supportive evidence?______ (# 6, 7, and/or 8) To which molecules is this membrane permeable? _____________________________________________ To which molecules is it impermeable? _____________________________________________________ \g"LYZUVſ׿׿׿ſοο hUCJhU5>*CJhrhUCJhrhU5CJ h CJhrh 5CJ h >*CJ h 5CJ4A a - e ^ ` dhgdU & F dh w Lv./0TUVWXYZ^ & F Z[\g{|"uvJKgdU & FKLYZ;ij68 & F hdh^hgdUdhgdU & FdhgdUgdU / =!"#$%666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~ OJPJQJ_HmH nH sH tH <`< NormalCJ_HmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontViV 0 Table Normal :V 44 la (k ( 0No List 6>6 Title$a$ 5>*CJDD ;$0 Balloon TextCJOJQJaJJJ ;$0Balloon Text CharCJOJQJaJPK![Content_Types].xmlj0 u$Nwc$ans@8JbVKS(.Y$8MVgLYS]"(U֎_o[gv; f>KH|;\XV!]օ Oȥsh]Hg3߶PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!\theme/theme/theme1.xmlYOoE#F{o'NDuر i-q;N3' G$$DAč*iEP~wq4;{o?g^;N:$BR64Mvsi-@R4Œ mUb V*XX! cyg$w.Q "@oWL8*Bycjđ0蠦r,[LC9VbX*x_yuoBL͐u_.
